The Work Of The Spirit

The Work Of The Spirit

Many times the bible describes the influence that the righteous will bring as a seed and tree (Psalm 1:1-3, Matthew 13:1-23, 13:31-32, Psalm 92:12-15, Isaiah 61:1-3, Ezekiel 47:12, Revelation 22:1-2).

The seed discussed here is the seed of the Word of God. When the seed of the Word begins to grow in the life of believers, then their lives will manifest like trees that were prophesied by Ezekiel and John when they were exiled in Patmos.

1. We have to take care of the seed in order for it to grow.
Man (new creation) needs the Word of God in order to live (to have a divine life that he has received from God when he experienced new birth). The Word is described as a seed because of the abilities that the Word has. With the Word of God in the life of a new creation means:
(1) the Word will begin a new cycle in the life of believer,
(2) the Word will ensure the continuity of the divine life in the life of believer,
(3)  the Word will ensure growth and breakthrough/progress in believer's life. However it requires cooperation from the believer. The believer has to guard his first love to God; make sure he has a gentle, teachable spirit and willing to change; experience the work of the spirit of prayer and the spirit of knowledge of God. Those are all the elements needed in order for the seed of the Word that was sown can continue to grow in believer's life.

2. A plant needs water and sunlight in order to grow and become a big tree.
When our spirit men always have the love to God; a gentle, teachable heart and willing to change; the work of the spirit of prayer and the spirit of knowledge of God, we are conditioning ourselves to always experience the true work of the Spirit. We have to make sure the Words that we (as believers) received, are not distracted by our lack of understanding, inner conflicts, the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches (Matthew 13:19-22). The work of the Spirit in our lives provides assurance that every Word will be rooted and grow in our lives. The Spirit works to help us understand the implementation of every Word in our lives. There is grace that works and enables us to be the doer of the Word. This spiritual position will enable us to overcome distractions from the spirit of fear and the spirit of the love of money. A good land of the heart is ready for the Word to work deeper.

3. A tree needs fertile soil and proper fertiliser to be fruitful.
We have to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit that He reveals through the voice of our conscience, so we will rise as the righteous. There should be no distortion or interference from other parties (in this case, the work of the spirit of the world) when our conscience begins to speak. A lot of times we could not immediately obey to certain directions because there is still 'pest disturbances' from the spirit of the world. Consequently there is always a struggle to obey in our mind or heart. When we still 'struggle' to follow the guidance of our conscience, it means there is still 'gap' that can be used by the enemy to give his 'opinion or voices'. We, as believers, must be persistent in declaring the Word and 'close down' all gaps that are often used by the enemy to give his voices into our heart (Psalms 8:2).

4. Once a tree begins to bear fruits, it will produce many similar trees.
When believer begins to follow his conscience, I believe, one of the directions that the Holy Spirit gives is to lead the believer to recognise and enter 'the fields that God has blessed' (Genesis 27:27);  the kind of 'good work' (Ephesians 2:10) that he must complete. In that area of life, God will 'sow' his life into a seed (Matthew 13:36-38). And when he outworks every Word that he received, his life will become like the palm trees (Psalms 92:12-15); the trees of righteousness (Isaiah 61:3), which means even though God will bring his life to be the righteous that shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of the Father (Matthew 13:43), but God will not make it happen overnight; He will let the believer to progressively grow his spiritual roots to diligently pursue the truth; learn to be stronger by fighting every challenge that come from his decision to obey to the voice of the Spirit - against the current of the world, guarding the flame of the work of the Holy Spirit and have the thirst and hunger of God in his heart until he always feel the reality of God in his life. All those things will help the believer to build a certain reputation in his life. The reputation that is build up in truth and grace will position him as the righteous. When God sees His believers ready to be promoted to be part of the righteous, the Father will create a spiritual momentum as the moment to 'ordain' the appearance of the righteous in a nation. From then on everything that the righteous do will 'feed' and 'heal' the nations (Ezekiel 47:12, Revelation 22:1-2). (Ps. Steven Agustinus)
